7 Day Green Kalahari Safari

This tour is for the adventurous student who is prepared to “rough it” in wild Africa.  A true safari offering cultural as well as wildlife experiences, this is a camping trip which utilises a specially equipped 4x4 vehicle to explore the dry Northern Cape (partly desert) and to allow access to remote areas such as the Kalagadi Transfrontier Park.  

Day 1          Johannesburg - Upington  

Depart Johannesburg 06h30.  Stop over in Kuruman to visit ‘Die Oog’, a natural spring and also time to visit one of the many semi-precious stone shops that abound.  Onwards to our accommodation in Upington where a traditional home-cooked meal awaits us.  Lunch own expense.

Day 2          Upington - Augrabies (Upington students join tour 08h00)

Meet and greet with Upington students.  Visit dried fruit factory in Upington and then onwards to Augrabies via Keimoes and Kakamas.  View Kanoneiland (largest man made island in southern hemisphere) and the Water Wheels.  In the afternoon we view the world’s 6^th highest waterfall - Augrabies Falls.  Camp at Augrabies National Park.

Day 3          Augrabies - Riemvasmaak Hot Springs

During the course of the morning you have the option of canoeing, white water rafting or mountain biking (all own expense and with parental consent).  After lunch, we head north along the back roads to the lunar landscape of Riemvasmaak where we are welcomed by the local people.  Camp at Riemvasmaak hot springs.

Day 4          Riemvasmaak - Kalagadi Transfrontier Park

Into the desert we go, entering the remote and very beautiful Kalagadi Transfrontier Park - one of the largest conservation areas in the world at 3.7 million hectares.  We drive through 4x4 territory, game viewing over sand dunes and across saltpans to our overnight campsite in the desert.

Day 5          Kalagadi Transfrontier Park

We explore this remote wilderness in our 4x4 vehicle.  Black maned lions, hyena, springbok, eland and cheetah are just a few of the special animals we may encounter.  In the evening we do a night game drive to hopefully see some of the nocturnal animals that you find in the desert.

Day 6          Kalagadi Transfrontier Park - Upington

Last game drive and then exit the Park.  We visit the Red Dune area where we go dune-boarding.  Reach Upington in afternoon.  Upington students leave here.  Fixed accommodation.  Dinner own expense.

Day 7          Upington - Johannesburg

Drive back to Johannesburg to arrive in late afternoon. Lunch own expense.

Euro 290 per person, JHB/Upington departure

NOTE : It is possible to do the Green Kalahari Safari and the Cape Town Getaway tours one after the other.  This will become a 15 day Kalahari Cape Town tour, with the price being Euro 290 + Euro 300.  The last day of the Kalahari Safari will not end in Johannesburg but will continue onwards to Cape Town from Upington.  Students from JHB could do a bus transfer to Upington if they do not want to do the Green Kalahari trip.
